Review
Summary: Susie Salmon is a young girl who was brutally raped and murdered. She looks down from heaven to watch over her family as well as her murderer. Susie has to weigh which is her more significant desire which is either to get vengeance or to allow her family to heal.
Review: On December 6, 1973 in Norristown, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia, Susie Salmon decides to take a shortcut back to home from school. On the way back, her neighbor invites Susie to his newly built underground den. Once inside, Susie was raped, stabbed to death and her body was dismembered by her neighbor. The neighbor then contains Susie’s body in a safe and throws it into a sinkhole.
The Lovely Bones describes about how a girl named Susie Salmon who has been murdered and watches over her family and killer from heaven. In Susie’s interpretation, heaven is such a perfect place that could mould into whatever form she wants.
The plot starts when the Salmon family found Susie’s dismembered elbow and hat and begins to accept her death. However, they do not want their daughter to die in vain and this the quest to find out the murderer begins. The police at first interrogate the neighbor and find him a bit weird but have no reasons to suspect him. Nonetheless, Susie’s father was ever so suspicious of the neighbor.
The Salmon family was deeply disappointed when a detective named Len Fenermen dropped by their house one day and told them that the police have exhausted all leads and are dropping the investigation. Still suspicious, Susie’s sister breaks into the neighbor’s house to find a drawing of the pit but was forced to leave when the neighbor came back suddenly. The neighbor sensing that he was being suspected quickly escapes the town.
Up in heaven, Susie delves into her murderer’s traumatic childhood past and develops a kind of pity for him. After a few years, the neighbor returns back to Norristown to find it developed. He revisits the place he murdered Susie and also the sinkhole where Susie’s body lies.
So who was the murderer who is also Susie’s neighbor? Was justice served in the end to the murderer since Susie was killed so traumatically? To know all these, you would have to watch The Lovely Bones.
