Review
Summary: A CIA agent who plans to retire volunteers to look after his girlfriend’s children when she was away only to be intruded by Russia spies.
Review: Personally, I feel that Jackie Chan cannot act in anything other than films which has fight scenes and action in it. Well as they all say, concentrate on your strengths rather than weakness. Perhaps Chan is following the saying to the core as once again, we are presented with another one of those films starring Jackie Chan in The Spy Next Door.
The plot is about Bob Ho (Jackie Chan) who in the eyes of everyone else is a pen salesman but is actually a senior CIA agent who plans to retire from the spy game. Bob wants to retire because he wants to marry single mum Gillian (Amber Valletta) but Gillian’s kids do not really like him because well, he’s just a boring pen salesman.
So, in an attempt to mend Bob’s relationships with the kids; Bob decided to babysit Gillian’s kids when she is away at Denver. However, little did Bob know that he’s actually putting the kids to jeopardy and harm as some Russian spies came to look for him as Bob was trying to foil their plot to steal petroleum.
The movie’s plot is basically the above and to support the plot, there are definitely ample of fight scenes whereby Jackie’s talent could be put to good use. Bob Ho was seen using whatever things he could reach to ward off those Russian thugs; be it pots and pans or brooms (another one of Jackie’s trademark).
The storyline might be quite clichéd and ubiquitous but it is definitely a pleasant movie to watch as it does not require much deep comprehension. The Spy Next Door is suited for parents who want to take their kids out to watch a movie as this movie emphasizes a lot on staying together and be a team player. As they say, the family that plays together and stays together; or in this case; the family that spies together, stays together!
