Barney’s Version Movie Review

20 December, 2010

moviePoster

Barney’s Version is a movie by Richard J. Lewis, which is based on the novel with the same name. The novel was written by Mordecai Richler. The film revolves around the main protagonist played by Paul Giamatti and his out of control lifestyle. Barney is depicted as a romantic and impulsive person. He is also politically incorrect and fearlessly blunt person, who lives an unruly, outsized and sloppy life. The film takes its viewers in a flashback journey through Barney’s past life.

The film opens in 1947 Rome, where Barney is depicted as oil exporting a businessman, who hangs out in the company of natives and ex-pats. He meets his first wife Clara through boogie. When his first relation ends in a tragedy, Barney moves back to Montreal, where he establishes a career of a successful TV producer. There he meets the wealthy “the second Mrs. Palliative”. However given his unpredictable way, Barney falls in love with Miriam, who eventually becomes his third wife.  The movie is about Barney’s self-revelations about his love, life and various scandalous affairs that has been a part of his life.

Barneys’s version is basically a comic novel. However, a deep streak of melancholy is very evident .the undercurrent of sorrow behind the apparently dramatic screenplay is sure to move the hardest critic of Barney. The viewer may not sympathies with him, but at one point of time, they can help emphasizing with him.

Performances by Paul Giamatti in the role of Barney and Dustin Hoffman in the role of Barney’s father are noteworthy. Paul effectively depicts Barney’s sense of dark humor. Dustin Hoffman lends considerable weight to a role, that otherwise could have been considered minor, had it been enacted by any other actor.

The film has just premiered in the Venice and Toronto film festival. Paul Giamatti’s heart wrenching dramatic acting is said to befit the award of the “best male actor” for a performance that is so natural yet so marvelous in its own way.

No Strings Attached Movie Review

20 December, 2010

moviePoster

No Strings Attached can be identified as a romantic comedy. The movie, on the whole, deals with couple of characters, who are apparently allergic towards the concept of love. However, in the end, they cannot help themselves in responding to the desire of each other’s heart for something more than just a sexual relationship.

The two main characters of this movie are played by Natalie Portman as Emma Franklin and Ashton Kutcher as Adam Kurtzman. Adam is an aspiring standup comedian, who becomes disillusioned with the concept of love, after he discovers that his dad secretly dating his four-year-old girlfriend. Emma, on the other hand, is a doctor undergoing her medical training. She attributes her lack of faith in the concept of love to her troubled childhood and her strained relationship with her mother. Both of them gets into a relationship of benefit and become similar to “fuckbuddies”. They follow the strict rules of not interfering into one another’s life, but very soon both of them cannot help, but feel jealous about the presence of people from the opposite sex in their partner’s life.

The film explores a concept of love and sexuality in a comic way. It very well brings out the dilemma in both the characters in a somewhat funny way. The film has a heavy dose of raunchy humor, with Emma having her fair share of dirty dialogues. Natalie Portman portrays the role of a confused young medical trainee with considerable ease. However, her performance in No strings attached is no match to her awe-inspiring performance in “the black swan. Ashton Kutcher plays the conventional role of a womanizer with great conviction. The movie is directed by Ivan Reitman and is set to premiere in a few days time. It is supposed to hit the theatres on January 21, 2011.

The movie includes a strong star cast when it comes to the vocalists. They include Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, Leslie Mann, Rodrigo Santoro and Jake T. Austin. Although ‘Rio’ has not been given a rating yet, but it is believed to have received a P or PG rating in all probable. A respectable amount of money has been spent on this movie, so viewers tend to have lot of expectation from this one.

The story of ‘Rio’ has been woven around the glorious capital of Rio de Janeiro as well as around the luxurious Brazilian rain forest. The film focuses on the adventure of Blu, a rare male Minnesota Macaw, who believes that he is the only remaining of his breed. Then, one day Blu finds out that there is another blue macaw, of his breed and it tends to be a female. So, Blu leaves the security and coziness of his cage and flies towards the city of Rio.

In the film ‘Rio’, when Blu meets Jewel for the very first time, there was nothing like love at first sight. Both were completely different. Blu was a flight-challenged and domesticated bird, while Jewel was a high-flying and intensely independent bird.
