The Losers Movie Review
29 April, 2010
New adaptation of a comic book series, The Losers does not make the weight beside the recent and very diverting Kick-Ass. It will however manage to relieve the many amateurs of the kind who impatiently await the exit of a certain Iron Man 2.
A shock unit given up by its superiors decide to fill the contract with an unknown female intrigante (played by Zoe Saldana) while making everything to get rid of their former Boss Max (Played by Jason Patric). Who knows what the five members of Losers – Clay (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Jensen (played by Chris Evans), Roque (played by Idris Elba), Pooch (played by Columbus Short) and Cougar (played by Jaenada Oscar) – are able to make to arrive to their goal.
This cinematographic transposition of a popular comic book by Andy Diggle joins a groundwork similar to Mission: Impossible. The members of the team must count the ones on the others, some treasons await them and the malicious one spends his time changing country to prove how he has the capacity and the oney. While looking there more closely, it is also possible to see that this is a second reading of the imposing The Usual Suspects by Bryan Singer. The five comparses are plunged in a story which exceeds them, an almost omniscient diabolic spirit draws the strings, several external pawns appear to scramble the charts, a mini revelation appears in the last straight line and there is even a large muscular scene which is held in a port!
There stops the comparisons with these works definitely more ambitious. The Losers does not make in subtlety and that hardly interests the scenario writers to develop the characters correctly or to even equip them with dialogs at least a little deep. All is a question of action scenes, explosions and confrontations which has to arrive every ten minutes, like a metronome regulated with the quarter of turn. These are a little redundant sequences which make the heart of the tale and as a whole, they prove vibrating. Although the director Sylvain White (creator of the unequal Stomp the Yard) always has tendency to to present in a typical setting in scene which privileges too much the idles and the catches of sight worthy of MTV, the kind is treated with respect and much derision. It is finally the humor more than the innumerable chases which allow us to pass a light pleasant moment.
The Suave Interpretation is also not foreign with the modest success of the company. Jeffrey Dean Morgan practically takes again his character of the actor in Watchmen, not hesitating to alternate the jokes placed well, the brawls which move much air and the punches in the face of female characters. He has especially the imposing presence to defend the first roles effectively and this, even if he always passes for a Robert Downey Jr. Substitute. He eclipses his game partners all the same, except perhaps Chris Evans which has fun like an insane person, and Jason Patric which camps with delight another irresistible villain.
If it taps at least its pin of the play within a calendar already nourished well with large Hollywood productions, a continuation is likely to be born in the near future. Perhaps that with the image of the new Batman or Super-Man franchise, the first volume was only used to put the table, and that the fun will really begin with the second episode. It is to be wished. While waiting, The Losers makes the job, neither more nor less. What is always a good news, especially beside its painful trailer.
Oceans Movie Review
29 April, 2010
High quality Documentary surveying sea-beds, Oceans makes vibrate by its images of a great beauty and its exceptional soundtrack. A diving in apnea which does not make however forget its some errors… at least in the version intended for North America screens.
Thanks to its Nature branch, Disney seeks to work on documentary projects on the ecological stakes of humanity. Last year, Earth allowed us to discover the beauties of the ground, its fauna and its flora. For the 2010 Earth Day, the father of Mickey Mouse distributes Oceans, this environmental movie of Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud which crashed to pieces the French box office last January.
With a considerable budget, both Jacques Cousteau of the 21e century are thrown literally in the various oceans of the world, exploring these poetic places, joining with its many inhabitants, pointing out the big challenges which they are likely to meet. An extraordinary adventure within these cemeteries of water and dust where the silence of the places ironically leaves the place to a variety of species which must cohabit together.
The documentary on the subject are legion, as much those of the BBC which were released in the cinemas (one of best remains The Blue Planet). What does Oceans bring more? It is interested first of all in animals rarely shown on the screen, revealing them in their natural elements. It does it in an especially bright way thanks to a seizing photographic team and the catches of sight to cut the breath. An image is worth 1000 words and this saying never was that true only here, with these fish which whirl and these water bubbles which enter in symbiosis, concerned with the dances as poetic as enchanters.
The two creators fully use the possibilities of their medium, which slices with the competition, of those their talks not often exciting could have been found directly on television. The montage, at the same time flexible and active, assembly slackens or reinvigorates the rhythm, creating a domino effect, drawing the attention of the spectator quickly. The whole is rocked by a very interesting soundtrack of Bruno Coulais who uses the cords of his orchestra to reach the grace, evoking the voyages in space which proceed rather in sea-beds.
The exercise is however not perfect, and its some gaps could titillate the amateurs of the kind. Alarmed and interesting, the narration Pierce Brosnan (in the English version released in North America) seems sometimes superfluous, breaking celestial balance somewhat, bringing back the two feet on the ground (or in the sea) with its information which must be conveyed. The ecological messages want to be also supported, especially at the time of the conclusion which wastes a little the movie. With this chapter, the song which opens the credits appears indigestible, drowning the message in syrup more sticking and more sweetened. Why do as much addition when the whole thing arrives on this side of the Atlantic? Because the original version was much longer and there was only approximately five minutes of blah…
Difficult to create new thing with such a tested theme. Oceans is making his way surprisingly well, resorting to exquisite images and memorable melodies. The tandem of scenario writers made us dream on their precedent The Travelling Birdsand and here it is to repeat in a brilliant manner. Let’s hope that the next one will not be adapted at all, reducing the words at least, trusting its raw material without always pointing out how this paradise is likely to become the hell if the world population does not do anything to change it.
